West Africa Project Fair and Community Service Program

 

9 Days – Only $1,829, Per Person, Double Occupancy

When you look into the eyes of a child whose life you have changed, you will be forever different.

 

 

Wed., Oct. 26 - Arrive in Dakar: Arrive in Dakar. Airport/hotel transfer provided for group members arriving on specified flights. Accommodations are at the first class Novotel Dakar Hotel, which includes daily breakfasts.  This afternoon sightseeing will include the colorful markets including Tilen Market, the picturesque residential district of Medina, before we participate in a team orientation with the Senegalese Rotary leadership.  This evening is free for rest and individual enjoyment. 

Thu., Oct. 27 – Dakar:  This morning, we our exploration of Dakar continues with a ferry ride to Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  We will see the "Door of No Return" through which millions of Africans passed on the way to slavery in the Americas. The tour includes a visit to the ethnographic museum and a lecture by the curator on the history of Gorée Island.   Lunch will be included as a tour service. 
After lunch, we will return to the mainland and visit the U.S. Embassy for a cultural, economic and political briefing.   This evening, we will join the Senegalese Rotarians for a special Rotary dinner event.

 

Fri., Oct. 28 -  Community Health Program:  Today, the local Rotarians will take us to Dag Health Centre and School of Bentegne, where we will participate in a hands-on program at the facility.  Our work will include construction of a school, and a visit to a community health center to participate in a local health care project.  Today’s experience will be similar to a polio immunization program where you are able to go into the communities and look into the eyes of a child whom you are helping.  Lunch is provided by local Rotarians.  This evening, we will enjoy “home hospitality” with the local Rotarians.  Similar to the International Convention program, this evening will give us a chance to get to know our Senegalese hosts and their communities.

 

Sat., Oct. 29 - West Africa Project Fair: All day engagement with Rotarians from 15 West African nations.  We will enjoy the Opening Ceremony, and get a better understanding of the Rotary Foundation’s engagement in Africa.  Lunch is provided. Immediate past Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith has accepted the invitation to join the West Africa Project Fair as a part of the program.  Free evening to explore the local restaurants, or just rest.

 

Sun., Oct. 30 - West Africa Project Fair:  Today, the project fair booths will be open.  We visit with clubs from all over West Africa to learn about their projects and see how we can join them in addressing their humanitarians needs.  Lunch included.  Tonight, we attend a special dinner event with the African Rotarians to close the West Africa Fair.

 

Mon., Oct. 31 - Community Service/Humanitarian Day: Today, we divide into smaller groups and join the local clubs to create friendships and visit the community service and humanitarian programs of the Dakar Rotary clubs. Lunch provided by local Rotarians.  This evening, we will enjoy a farewell event.

 

Tue., Nov. 1 - Joal - Fadiouth- Bandia/Last Minute Shopping: Today, we will enjoy a bit more sightseeing and an opportunity to shop before our trip ends.  Today, we will travel to the Bandia Nature Preserve where we may catch a glimpse of giraffes, white rhinos, zebras, etc., before continuing down the coast to the historical town of Joal Fadiouth.  Free evening for last minute rest and enjoyment.

 

Wed., Nov. 2 - Depart for Home: Early morning departure.
